Council for a Livable World Endorses Alan Khazei for Senate in Massachusetts
Council for a Livable World is proud to announce our endorsement of Democrat Alan Khazei for U.S. Senate in the Massachusetts special election to replace the late Senator Edward Kennedy.
This special primary election will be held on December 8 with the general election held on January 19.
The Council endorsed Khazei among a group of good candidates because of his intense activisim in the growing international movement for a world without nuclear weapons.
Khazei was a founding signatory of Global Zero, an organization advocating eliminating nuclear weapons. He participated in their inaugural conference in December 2008 in Paris, France. We are persuaded that he is the candidate most likely to be a leader on nuclear weapons issues in the U.S. Senate.
In addition, Khazei offers unique knowledge and insight into the volatile issue of Iran’s nuclear aspirations. His father was born in Iran, so the candidate has deep knowledge and understanding of Iran’s history, culture and U.S.-Iranian relations.
Alan Khazei has a 22-year record of public service. In 1988, after graduating from Harvard College and then Harvard Law School, he co-founded City Year in Boston. This non-profit program was modeled after the Peace Corps and is designed to engage young Americans in a year of service within the United States. The program has inspired more than 12,500 Americans to work in their communities to tutor and mentor more than a million children. President Bill Clinton fashioned AmeriCorps after this program.
Council board member and Nobel Laureate Dudley Herschbach said, “I've known Alan Khazei since his undergrad days at Harvard and am totally convinced that he would be a great senator. Alan is so strong on our issues that this endorsement sends a clear message to our members to take bold action."
Khazei is an underdog in this contest. He is little-known outside the activist community, especially when compared to the better-known state Attorney General Martha Coakley and U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano. A fourth major candidate is Steve Pagliuca, a wealthy business executive. But Khazei has a deep reservoir of devoted supporters and he has proven that he can raise the funds necessary to compete in this abbreviated campaign.
