Why Donate to Candidates through the Council?
We find candidates across the country who will lead the movement for progressive national security policies.
Almost 50 years ago, Council for a Livable World pioneered a system for helping progressive congressional candidates get elected to office. We recommend candidates across the country in need of support and you, the donor, decide where your contributions go.
Across the country, we pinpoint candidates who support nuclear arms control and who will be leaders for progressive national security policies. We recommend candidates in close races where your dollars can be crucial and when candidates have true financial need. They share our vision of working toward a more livable world and are challenging or being challenged by candidates who see otherwise.
Advantages of Giving to Candidates through Council for a Livable World
Council donations helped Donna Edwards (D-MD) win her special election against conservative incumbent Albert Wynn (D-MD).
Your contribution does double duty: it counts as a contribution from you, the donor, and it counts as a donation from the anti-Iraq War, pro-diplomacy and pro-nuclear weapons free world movement.
This guarantees that the candidate knows the contributions are from advocates of sensible national security policies.
That also means 100% of your contribution goes to the candidate - and not to pay electricity bills or salaries or overhead.
Other candidate assistance groups often decide for you which candidate receives your contribution, and can be restricted to giving no more than $5,000 to a single candidate. Council for a Livable World lets you decide where your money goes, and we can raise $50,000, $100,000 or even more for particularly strong candidates.
Our Track Record
Council supporters stuck by nuclear weapons expert Jeff Merkley (D-OR) through a tough primary. He now needs your support for his general election.
Council supporters, now over 40,000 strong, provide more funds to opponents of the arms race than any other arms control organization in America: over $1.5 million in 2006.
Over the last 44 years, we have helped elect 113 U.S. arms control candidates to the Senate and 151 candidates to the House of Representatives.
Our Endorsements for 2008
For the 2008 elections, the Council is supporting candidates who want to bring an end to the war in Iraq and push for a diplomatic solution with Iran. If elected, they will work to reduce nuclear weapons arsenals, end an ineffective missile defense system, and expand non-proliferation programs. We welcome suggestions of candidates to support from our members.
If Patrick Murphy (D-PA) wins his election, he will be the only two-term Iraq war veteran elected to Congress. Will you help him get there?
For the 2008 elections, we have already raised over $50,000 for a number of Senate candidates and over $15,000 for several House candidates, and we still have months ahead of us.

Don't forget to support Council for a Livable World at the same time - our ability to find and endorse these candidates relies on contributions from thousands of individuals just like you across the country.
Together, we can help create a more livable world.
