Act Fast -- Help Progressive Candidates
Candidates for the U.S. Senate face an important deadline on September 30, when they are required to report their latest fundraising totals to the Federal Election Commission. An impressive total is viewed by political experts as an important indicator of a candidate's viability.
Tom Allen of Maine
Allen is a bold and courageous progressive who opposed the Iraq war from the start. He is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins, who voted for the war in 2002.
Collins is trying to have it both ways by attracting independents and Democrats without alienating Republicans. She has criticized President Bush's war policies in speeches, but she has refused to vote to bring our troops home.
On July 18, Senator Collins voted to have the Senate consider a Democratic amendment to set a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. But when the amendment came up for a vote in September, she changed her vote to "no."
Rep. Allen does not equivocate; he votes consistently to bring our soldiers home. Click here to contribute $100, $250, or $500.
Mark Udall of Colorado
As a member of the House of Representatives, Udall voted against the Iraq war resolution in October 2002 in the face of pro-war hysteria generated by the Bush Administration.
Udall is vying with ex-Rep. Bob Schaffer for the seat opened by a retiring hawk, Senator Wayne Allard. Schaffer not only voted for the war but accuses critics of President Bush of fomenting "loss and surrender" in Iraq.
Udall, on the other hand, has a strong record on national security issues, scoring an 88 percent on the Council for a Livable World's PeacePAC voting scorecard.
