Democrat - Incumbent
Endorsed for U.S. House of Representatives by Council for a Livable World Candidate Fund

Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva has been a tireless champion of progressive causes in the House of Representatives and is a Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. This year, he faces his most serious electoral challenge since he was first elected in 2002 and he needs your help.

Grijalva believes the best security policies address the root causes of national and international conflicts, rather than exploiting fear or offering a false sense of security.

Grijalva believes the best security policies address the root causes of national and international conflicts, rather than exploiting fear or offering a false sense of security. He is concerned that spending hundreds of billions of dollars on unnecessary wars and unproven “security” technology will bankrupt our nation and further divide people. He believes that our domestic and foreign policies must occupy the moral high ground and reflect the best of American values: tolerance, inclusiveness, fairness and a commitment to civil rights.

Grijalva has earned a 100% score from PeacePAC every year he has been in office. He has been a leader in the effort to bring American troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. In the last several years, he has voted for legislation to cut funding for expensive and unnecessary weapons systems and costly and ineffective missile defense programs. He opposed the U.S.-India deal on nuclear cooperation.

Grijalva has been a leading advocate for comprehensive immigration reform. He supports measures to bring millions of undocumented residents into compliance with the law and to ensure that law enforcement agencies can track who is living in this country. When Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer recently signed Arizona’s controversial immigration law, SB 1070, Grijalva called for civic, political and religious organizations not to hold their conventions in Arizona. This bold position has made him a top Republican target.

Right-wing donors have flocked to Ruth McClung, a guidance navigation specialist at Raytheon running against Grijalva. McClung is a strong advocate of military spending, and missile defense in particular. Criticism of Grijalva’s positions on immigration is a key element of McClung’s platform. She enjoys active support from local “tea party” groups and considers herself a member of the movement.

Grijalva has always been a strong grassroots campaigner and is well loved by his constituents, but in a difficult election year -- with his strong positions on hot button issues -- he is in danger of a November upset.
