Michigan is the eighth largest state with a population of about 10 million, an industrial powerhouse in the Mid-West. Its economy spawned the assembly line and the automobile industry that changed America forever. A strong labor union presence and a large African-American community gave the state a progressive cast that leaned Democratic in politics.

However, the troubles of the industry have created severe economic problems in Michigan, including one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. The economic challenges led to a strong Republican resurgence in the state in 2010. These gains in 2010 have given the Republicans and the Tea Party a new sense of confidence in Michigan - the Tea Party Express recently listed the Senator on its "2012 Tea Party Target List.” A tough race is expected.

As a member of the Senate leadership in the 112th Congress, Sen. Stabenow serves on the powerful Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Energy Committee and the Budget Committee, and is Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture.

Senator Debbie Stabenow grew up in a small Michigan town and went to Michigan State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree and a master’s degrees in social work. She has been in politics almost all her adult life.

She was elected county commissioner before she finished her graduate degree, then elected to the State House at age 28 where she was a leader on family law and child abuse issues. Elected to the State Senate in 1990, Stabenow was the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1994, her only losing campaign.

Two years later she successfully challenged incumbent conservative Representative Dick Chrysler, a millionaire follower of Newt Gingrich. Stabenow won impressively 54% to 44%, and won reelection easily in 1998 with 57% of the vote.

In 2000, Stebenow challenged incumbent Republican Senator Spencer Abraham. The contest was close, with the challenger trailing until the end. However, she beat Abraham by 49% - 489%, a margin of about 66,000 votes out of four million cast.

During her re-election bid in 2006, she scored a solid victory with 57% of the vote. Council for a Livable World enthusiastically supported her in both of those races.

Stabenow's accomplishments have been widely recognized. As a member of the Senate leadership in the 112th Congress, Sen. Stabenow serves on the powerful Senate Finance Committee, the Senate Energy Committee and the Budget Committee, and is Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture.

Senator Stabenow has taken a thoughtful and common sense approach to national security issues. She voted to stop the development of new nuclear weapons in order to prevent a new and dangerous arms race. She has also opposed wasteful spending on a national missile defense system that has yet to work. Additionally, she voted for the New START Treaty to reduce US and Russian nuclear arsenals.

Sen. Stabenow earned a 100% rating on the Council’s voting record for the 111th Congress.

Council for a Livable World believes it is important to return Senator Stabenow to the Senate.
