In 2018, Gina Ortiz Jones lost one of the closest races in the country to incumbent Rep. Will Hurd by only 926 votes. She is running again while Hurd has announced his retirement from Congress. The district runs along the majority of Texas’s border with Mexico and is predominantly rural.
Jones is an Iraq War veteran and intelligence analyst for US Africa Command in Germany and later joined the DIA where she specialized in Latin America.
She graduated from Boston University with a BA in East Asian studies and an MA in Economics. She later earned an MA in Military Arts and Sciences at the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies of the United States Army Command and General Staff College.
Jones served under both President Obama and President Trump working in the U.S. Trade Representative office until June 2017.
She will be a strong advocate of progressive national security positions.
