Rep. Don Beyer is serving his fifth term as the U.S. Representative from Virginia’s 8th District, representing Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and parts of Fairfax County. He currently serves on Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, and also the House Ways and Means Committee.
Rep. Beyer formerly served as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1990-1998 and as the Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein under President Barack Obama, where he used his position to advocate for stricter sanctions to compel Iran to begin nuclear disarmament discussions.
Throughout his time in Congress, Beyer has a near-perfect voting record and a strong history of activism on Council issues. In 2021, he formed the bicameral congressional Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group with three other Members of Congress who lead on these issues. The working group has been active in urging President Joe Biden to make bold decisions to reduce the size of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, as well as the role that nuclear weapons play in U.S. national security policy. They have also pushed the administration to support renewed negotiations with Russia in a regular, extensive, comprehensive dialogue on a broad range of nuclear and arms control issues.
