Texas Republicans have repeatedly attempted to defeat Rep. Lloyd Doggett by gerrymandering him all across South and Central Texas. But he has triumphed and finally has a new district centered on Austin, where he is well known for his longtime and active leadership on progressive issues.
He has served in the House since 1995 and has been a consistently strong progressive voice in a very conservative state. He was one of the first Members of Congress to oppose the war in Iraq, opposed the surge of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, was a leader in supporting the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, and has repeatedly opposed sales of U.S. weapons to Saudi Arabia for use in Yemen.
He opposes unnecessary new kinds of nuclear weapons, argues against an excessive defense budget, voted to block funding for new ICBMs and supports a “No First Use of Nuclear Weapons” policy.
Council for a Livable World backed Doggett in his very first attempt to serve in Washington and is delighted to do so again.
