Rep. Don Beyer is serving his sixth term as the U.S. Representative from Virginia’s 8th District, representing the Washington, D.C.-area suburbs of Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church and parts of Fairfax County. He currently serves on Congress’ Joint Economic Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee.
Throughout his time in Congress, Beyer has a near-perfect voting record and a strong history of activism on Council issues and has long been endorsed by the Council. In 2021, he formed the bicameral congressional Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group with three other Members of Congress who lead on these issues. The working group’s efforts have injected much-needed oversight into U.S. nuclear modernization and pushed Congress to remain active on arms control and non-proliferation.
Rep. Beyer formerly served as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1990-1998 and as the Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein under President Barack Obama, where he used his position to advocate for stricter sanctions to compel Iran to begin nuclear disarmament discussions. Rep. Beyer also formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Council’s sister organization, the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.
