Senator Jon Tester, whom the Council has supported in each of his three races (including in a Democratic primary in his first race), is one of the most vulnerable incumbent Democrats up for election and this seat is a top GOP priority in 2024.
Jon is a third-generation Montanan who brings his Montana values with him to the U.S. Senate. He and his wife, Sharla, still farm the same land just outside of Big Sandy that his grandparents homesteaded over 100 years ago. When Jon was nine years old, he lost three fingers on his left hand in a meat grinder accident. A childhood steeped in family agriculture gave him the values that have defined his career, and he brings those values to work with him every day in D.C.
Tester holds an important Senate position for our issues: he chairs the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. Tester is ranked one of the most effective senators in Washington – of either party. His work has improved access to services for our veterans, protected our national security, and held government accountable.
The state went for Trump against Biden 57-41%. Tester won in 2018 50-47%.
