WASHINGTON, DC—The Council for a Livable World has endorsed four new candidates: two candidates for the Senate and two for the House of Representatives.
The Senate endorsements are in races that will be key to taking back Democratic control of the Senate:
- New Hampshire: Governor Maggie Hassan (D) is running to challenge hawkish incumbent Senator Kelly Ayotte (R). Hassan served several years in New Hampshire’s State Senate before being elected as two-term governor. She supports diplomatic solutions to conflict, has backed the Iran nuclear deal, and wants to see the Pentagon slush fund eliminated.
- Nevada: Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) is running for the open Senate seat occupied by Minority Leader Harry Reid, who is retiring next year. Cortez Masto supports the Iran nuclear agreement, reducing nuclear weapons stockpiles and restoring funding to non-proliferation programs. She faces Tea Party Congressman Joe Heck who has so far received a 0% score on Council for a Livable World’s Legislative Scorecard.
The Council has also endorsed two new candidates for the House of Representatives:
- Iowa: Iraq War veteran Jim Mowrer (D) is running to represent Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District. Having served in Iraq and experienced firsthand the cost of warfare in the Middle East, Mowrer is strongly opposed to the unnecessary use of military action and instead believes the United States should promote peace through diplomatic means and international institutions. He has also worked at the Pentagon, where he worked to cut bureaucratic waste, a position which he believes will appeal to fiscally conservative voters.
- California: In California’s 10th District, Michael Eggman is running a rematch race against the Republican incumbent Rep. Jeff Denham, who defeated Eggman narrowly in 2014 and who has a 13% score on Council for a Livable World’s Legislative Scorecard. Eggman believes strongly in the power of diplomacy to avoid entangling the U.S. in more costly military conflicts. He supports the Iran nuclear agreement as well as the pursuit of eliminating nuclear weapons worldwide.
