Washington, D.C.– Council for a Livable World today noted that New START critic Sen. Jon Kyl, Republican of Arizona, has been forced to rely on New START proponents to back up his criticisms of the treaty.

In his Senate floor speeches yesterday and today, Kyl discussed a series of concerns he has with New START, including on verification, missile defense, prompt global strike and a world free of nuclear weapons.

John Isaacs, the Council’s executive director remarked: “Poor Senator Kyl. The best experts he can come up with all endorse the New START that the Arizona Senator opposes.

“Sometimes Kyl acknowledges their endorsements, sometimes not, added Isaacs

“Kyl’s problem, continued Isaacs, “is that almost all prominent high level and retired national security and military officials are solidly behind New START.

The supporters of New START that Kyl was forced to quote include:

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen
STRATCOM Commander General Kevin Chilton
NNSA Administrator Thomas D'Agostino
Dr. Michael It Anastasio, Director, Los Alamos National Laboratory
Dr. George Miller, Director, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Former Secretary of everything Secretary James Schlesinger
Former Secretary of State James Baker
Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
