Washington DC – July 19, 2013 – News Release – Council for a Livable World applauds the open letter to President Obama led by Representatives Charles Dent (R-PA) and David Price (D-NC) and signed by 131 of their colleagues urging renewed diplomacy with Iran following recent elections.
“The election of President-elect Hassan Rouhani offers a new opportunity for the U.S. to pursue a negotiated solution to Iran’s nuclear program,� said Laicie Heeley, director of Middle East and Defense Policy at Council for a Livable World. “This letter is an unprecedented move by Congress to encourage the Administration’s diplomatic efforts and comes at a vital time in U.S.-Iranian relations.�
The letter received bipartisan support securing 17 Republican signatures, including Deputy Majority Whip, Rep. Thomas Cole (R-OK.)
Several pro-diplomacy groups have supported this letter, including Council for a Livable World. “After more than 2,500 advocacy messages from our members, we are pleased to see so many Members are urging renewed diplomacy with Iran,� said Guy Stevens, Director of Council for a Livable World’s PeacePAC.
