Council Celebrates Fourth Annual Drinan Peace and Human Rights Award

On June 2, 2009, members, staff, and friends of Council for a Livable World and its sister organization and research center, Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, along with several members of Congress came together to honor two peace and human rights advocates with the 2009 Father Robert F. Drinan National Peace and Human Rights Awards.

Gary Hart Praises Obama-Medvedev Commitment to New Nuclear Treaty

Former Senator Gary Hart, chairman of Council for a Livable World, praised Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitriy Medvedev for their commitment to negotiate a new legally-binding treaty to replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which expires in December.

Council for a Livable World Welcomes Clinton-Lavrov Steps Forward

Council for a Livable World today welcomed the commitment by the U.S. and Russian foreign ministers to move forward with negotiations on a successor to the START nuclear arms reduction treaty, which expires in December.

Council Board Member and Center Chairman Join Obama for Signing of Guantanamo Closure Order

On January 22, President Barack Obama signed an executive order that closes the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay within one year. Joining Obama at the Oval Office signing ceremony were Brig. General John Johns, board member of Council for a Livable World, and Lt. General Robert Gard, chairman of its sister organization, the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.
