Council for a Livable World Endorses Rep. Ed Markey for Senate

Boston, MA/Washington DC – January 18, 2012 – News Release – The Council for a Livable World’s Board of Directors met today in Boston, MA and unanimously voted to endorse Representative Edward Markey’s campaign for U.S. Senate.

“During his tenure in the House of Representative, Rep. Markey has been a tireless champion for sensible arms control, keeping dangerous nuclear materials out of the hands of terrorists and a host of other major national security issues, said Ira Lechner, Chairman of the Council for a Livable World. “After a record-breaking year of fundraising, the Council is prepared to help elect Rep. Markey to the Senate where he can continue to fight for a strong national security policy that meets 21st century priorities.

Rep. Markey will be running in a special election to replace Sen. John Kerry, who is expected to be confirmed shortly as Secretary of State. No Republican candidate has yet declared, but many expect recently defeated Senator Scott Brown will run.

“As a Bay Stater, I’m proud to have voted to endorse Rep. Markey’s candidacy for the Senate, said Priscilla McMillan, of Cambridge, MA, an expert on U.S.-Russia relations and Council for a Livable World board member. “Markey's courage and far-sightedness in nearly four decades of public service leading the effort for greater control of nuclear weapons and better protection of the environment make him the perfect successor to Senator Kerry.

During the 2012 election cycle, the Council for a Livable World raised more than $2.1 million for endorsed Senate and House candidates, including $201,702.37 bundled for Elizabeth Warren’s successful campaign against Sen. Scott Brown. Seventeen of the Council’s twenty endorsed 2012 Senate candidates were successful.
