Joel Rubin (D-M.D.) for House

Rubin Feature

Joel Rubin is running in a crowded primary for the open seat in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District.

The Race

Rubin is running for the seat of Rep. Chris Van Hollen, who in turn is running for the Senate. This contest will be decided in the Democratic primary which takes place on April 26.

This seat has a great number of democratic candidates in an expensive media market which will make this a pricy race.

About Joel Rubin

Joel Rubin is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for House Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of Legislative Affairs. In the Obama Administration, he served as the Department’s chief liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives and helped to achieve success for the Iran nuclear deal.

Prior to joining the Obama Administration, Mr. Rubin’s expertise on national security, especially on nuclear weapons issues led him to work as Director of Policy at Ploughshares Fund, a progressive foundation. He has also worked for the National Security Network, J Street, a pro-Israel and pro-peace organization and he is a regular commentator on foreign policy issues in the media. Joel Rubin is a champion and expert on the issues we focus on at the Council for a Livable World. He would be a trusted and productive ally in the House of Representatives.

On the Issues

Rubin will provide a strong progressive foreign policy voice to Maryland’s 8th District, Rubin’s expertise on nuclear weapons and the pentagon budget will be a great voice in Congress as we debate nuclear modernization. As federal budgets tighten, Rubin will be a leader in making sure our national security budget reflects the 21st century. In a candidate debate, he argued, “I am not going to deny my children the ability to take out books from the local public library so that Boeing and other corporate defense contractors can build multibillion-dollar jets that don’t work.”

Additionally, he supports reducing the Overseas Contingency Operations account, advocates ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, and defends the vision for moving responsibly toward a world entirely free of nuclear weapons.

Rubin has been a vigorous supporter of the Iran Deal, and has appeared on many media outlets, such as Fox News and MSNBC, to inform the public why he supports the Iran Deal.

The Opponent

Joel Rubin is in a tough primary against seven Democrats. His strongest opponents are state Sen. Jamie Raskin, Marriott executive Kathleen Matthews, and Total Wine CEO David Trone. All have raised large amounts of money. However, in these turbulent times, none have the national security expertise like Joel Rubin, which will be important to voters in the Maryland’s 8th District.

Let’s send a progressive national security expert to the House of Representatives that will champion sensible national security policies in the U.S. House.
